JioPC: Turning Every Indian TV into a Cloud-Based PC
Reliance Industries, led by India’s richest man Mukesh Ambani, is transforming how people access computing with its latest innovation—JioPC. This virtual desktop service, offered through Jio Platforms, aims to convert millions of televisions across India into functional personal computers. With the majority of Indian households owning a TV but lacking access to a traditional PC, this initiative targets a huge digital inclusion gap. JioPC connects to Jio's set-top box, enabling users to plug in a keyboard and mouse to access a full desktop environment—making digital productivity more accessible and affordable.

By embedding cloud PC functionality into television sets, JioPC brings a cost-effective alternative to traditional desktops and laptops. Whether you're a student needing basic word processing or a small business owner exploring spreadsheets, the JioPC allows access to these tools via LibreOffice, with web-based access to Microsoft Office through the built-in browser. The platform is currently in free trial and requires an invite, giving users a chance to test the technology before any wide-scale adoption. With internet infrastructure already built into the Jio Fiber ecosystem, JioPC could turn passive TV consumption into an active, digital experience.
How JioPC Works: Cloud Computing via Your Set-Top Box
At the core of the JioPC experience is its cloud computing technology. Users connect their television to a Jio set-top box, either bundled with Jio Fiber or bought separately. Once paired with a keyboard and mouse, the box unlocks a full PC experience—minus the high cost and hardware maintenance. This is made possible by virtual desktop infrastructure (VDI), a concept already popular in corporate settings but new to average households in India.
JioPC isn’t trying to replace high-performance machines but rather to bring computing access to the masses. The included LibreOffice suite allows for offline document editing, while web browsing supports cloud-based productivity tools. There are current limitations—external peripherals like cameras and printers aren’t supported yet, and video conferencing capabilities are restricted. However, for basic computing tasks like emailing, document preparation, schoolwork, or learning to code, JioPC’s offering could be a game-changer.
JioPC's Potential Impact on Digital Access in India
India faces a significant digital divide: although 70% of households own a TV, only 15% have access to a computer. JioPC aims to close this gap by making digital productivity as accessible as digital entertainment. The implications are massive—millions of students in rural areas could participate in online education, families could access government services from their living rooms, and small business owners could manage operations more efficiently.
Analysts believe JioPC could unlock a new layer of internet users who previously relied solely on mobile devices. Tarun Pathak of Counterpoint Research notes that this move gives Reliance an effective tool to grow its user base, already at over 488 million. However, public awareness and digital literacy remain key hurdles. Jio will need to roll out aggressive marketing and user education campaigns to help people understand how to use their TV as a PC. Visual tutorials, vernacular language support, and user-friendly interfaces could play critical roles in driving adoption.
The Road Ahead for JioPC: Challenges and Opportunities
Despite its promise, JioPC faces several challenges on the road to mass adoption. First, there's the issue of perception—many consumers might struggle to associate a TV with computing power. Second, India’s DTH (Direct-to-Home) television market is shrinking as streaming platforms grow, reducing the incentive for people to invest in a set-top box. According to government data, active pay-TV users dropped by 8% year-over-year as of March 2025. JioPC must therefore not only pitch itself as a PC replacement but also as a reason to stick with Jio's ecosystem.
On the flip side, JioPC arrives at a time when hybrid work, remote learning, and digital payments are becoming the norm. The demand for affordable computing solutions has never been higher. With smart pricing (₹5,499 or $64), a cloud-native approach, and deep integration into Jio’s home broadband network, JioPC could become a foundational product in India's digital transformation. If Jio continues to invest in ecosystem partnerships—such as with educational platforms, local app developers, or regional content creators—it may create a sticky user base that finds it hard to move away from the JioPC setup.
