Meta CTO Explains Why the Smart Glasses Demos Failed at Meta Connect — and It Wasn’t the Wi-Fi

Meta CTO Andrew Bosworth is setting the record straight after a series of awkward demo failures at Meta Connect this week. Many assumed poor Wi-Fi was to blame, but Meta CTO explains why the smart glasses demos failed at Meta Connect — and it wasn’t the Wi-Fi.

Smart Glasses Launch at Meta Connect

During the keynote, Meta unveiled three new smart glasses:

  • An updated version of the Ray-Ban Meta

  • The Meta Ray-Ban Display with a wristband controller

  • The Oakley Meta Vanguard designed for sports

The big reveal, however, was overshadowed when multiple live demos glitched on stage.

What Went Wrong With the Demos

In one demo, cooking creator Jack Mancuso tried to get AI-powered help on a sauce recipe. After repeating his question, the smart glasses skipped ahead in the instructions without giving him the first step. Mancuso eventually quipped that the Wi-Fi might be the culprit and handed the demo back to Mark Zuckerberg.

Another live test involved a WhatsApp video call between Bosworth and Zuckerberg. The call simply wouldn’t connect, forcing Zuckerberg to abandon the attempt as Bosworth joked about the “brutal” Wi-Fi.

Bosworth Clears the Air

After the event, Bosworth took to Instagram for a candid Q&A. Here, he explained that Wi-Fi issues were not the cause of the failures. Instead, the glitches came down to live-demo unpredictability and last-minute system changes.

“You can rehearse a hundred times, but there’s always a chance something breaks when it’s live,” Bosworth admitted. He stressed that the technology works reliably outside the demo stage and that Meta is continuing to refine performance before launch.

Why This Matters for Meta’s Future

The failures may have been embarrassing, but they highlight the challenges of showcasing cutting-edge AI-powered wearables in real time. With Meta betting big on smart glasses as part of its broader vision for the metaverse, Bosworth’s clarification was aimed at reassuring developers and early adopters that the technology is solid — even if the Connect demos weren’t.
