Markham Erickson, Google’s vice president of government affairs and public policy, explained that user behavior is changing. People are turning to AI summaries for fast answers instead of clicking through individual websites. According to Erickson, the goal is to maintain a “healthy ecosystem” where AI summaries complement traditional search results, often called the classic “10 blue links.”

The Controversy Around AI Overviews

Despite Google's defense, lawsuits have emerged questioning the impact of AI summaries. Penske Media Corporation, owner of Rolling Stone, alleges that AI Overviews reduce traffic to original websites. Lower traffic can affect advertising revenue and publisher sustainability, raising concerns about the balance between AI convenience and the health of the broader web ecosystem.
