Spotify is expanding its parent-managed accounts for children to users on its free tier for the first time. Families in the U.S., U.K., Australia, France, Germany and the Netherlands can now create a separate “Managed Account” for a child, giving parents more control over what their children listen to and which features they can access.

Spotify Managed Accounts Are Now Available to Free Users
Spotify announced the expansion on Wednesday, July 15, 2026, making parent-managed accounts available to families using the platform’s free tier in six markets.
The company’s Managed Accounts are designed to give children their own separate listening experience while allowing parents to control certain aspects of their accounts. Because the accounts are separate, a child’s music choices do not affect their parent’s algorithm or appear in the parent’s annual Spotify Wrapped experience.
Children can still personalize their experience within the limits set by their parents. They can add songs to their favorites, create their own playlists and receive personalized recommendations based on their listening activity.
The expansion gives families using Spotify’s free service access to controls that were previously limited to paid subscribers.
Parents Can Restrict Specific Artists and Songs
Managed Accounts give parents more granular control over the content their children can access on Spotify.
Parents can control and restrict playback of specific artists and songs. By default, children cannot listen to music labeled as explicit, while video playback is also disabled by default.
Spotify also limits interactivity features on managed accounts. This means children do not have access to age-gated features such as Messages.
These controls are intended to give parents more flexibility over their child’s experience. Rather than requiring families to use the separate Spotify Kids app, Managed Accounts allow children to have a more personalized account while parents retain control over content and certain platform features.
How Families Can Set Up a Managed Account
To set up a Managed Account, Family Plan account holders need to open their account pages in the Spotify app.
From there, parents can select the “Add a Member” option and then tap “Add a listener aged under 13 (or the market equivalent).” Spotify then guides parents through the setup process for the child’s account, including choosing a display name and completing the account setup steps.
The Managed Account is created as a separate account, allowing the child to have their own playlists, favorites and personalized recommendations without influencing the parent’s listening profile.
