Apple Maps Ads Ban Home Services in New Policy

Apple has published new advertising rules for its upcoming Apple Maps ads, revealing a more selective approach to local advertising than Google. The policy bans a broad range of home services businesses, including plumbing, electrical, locksmith, HVAC, pest control, roofing and general contracting companies.

Apple has not yet announced an exact launch date for Maps ads. The company previously said the service would arrive “this summer” in the U.S. and Canada, while newly published advertiser documentation suggests the rollout is getting closer.

Apple Maps Ads Take a Curated Approach

The new rules appear in Apple’s Advertising Services policy, which became effective on July 14, 2026. The policy includes specific requirements for advertising on Apple Maps and outlines categories that are not allowed to advertise on the platform.

One of the most notable restrictions covers home services businesses. Companies offering services such as plumbing, electrical work, locksmith services, HVAC, pest control, roofing and general contracting are among the businesses prohibited from advertising on Apple Maps.

Apple’s approach differs from Google’s local advertising strategy, where home services represent one of the largest categories for Local Services Ads. Google allows businesses in these sectors to advertise but requires additional verification processes, follow-ups and audits to maintain good standing.

Apple’s policy suggests it is initially focusing on businesses with a physical location that customers actually visit.

Maps Ads Could Look More Like Organic Listings

By limiting the types of businesses that can advertise, Apple could make paid placements on Maps feel more similar to regular map listings.

The strategy would make Apple Maps ads more closely tied to physical locations rather than allowing the platform to become a broad marketplace for every type of local service provider. This would be consistent with the company’s more curated approach in other areas of its business.

The policy may also help Apple avoid some of the verification challenges associated with certain home service categories. Locksmiths and garage door service providers, for example, can require additional checks before they are allowed to advertise on other platforms.

Google allows these businesses to use Local Services Ads but requires initial verifications, follow-ups and audits as part of its requirements for remaining in good standing.

Apple did not respond to a request for comment about the new advertising rules.

Apple Also Restricts Crypto ATMs and Bail Bonds

Home services are not the only categories excluded from Apple Maps advertising.

The policy also prohibits certain other businesses from advertising on Maps, including cryptocurrency ATMs and bail bonds providers.

These restrictions show that Apple is taking a selective approach to its newest advertising business. Rather than opening Maps ads broadly to all local businesses, the company is setting clear limits on which categories can buy advertising space.

The restrictions also reflect a broader pattern in how Apple manages its platforms. The company’s curated approach to the App Store appears to be influencing the way it is building its advertising products as well.

Medical Service Ads Will Be Reviewed Case by Case

Apple is also applying additional scrutiny to businesses that offer medical services.

According to the new policy, advertisements for medical services will be “evaluated on a case-by-case basis.”

This means businesses in the medical services category will not receive automatic approval simply because they meet general advertising requirements. Instead, Apple will assess these advertisements individually.

The policy gives Apple greater control over which medical service advertisements appear on Maps as the company prepares to expand its advertising presence on the platform.

Apple Maps Ads Launch Date Still Unconfirmed

Apple announced Maps ads earlier this year but has not provided a specific launch date. The company has only said the ads would arrive “this summer” in the U.S. and Canada.

The publication of advertiser documentation and Maps-specific advertising policies suggests the launch is approaching, although Apple has not confirmed when the ads will become available.

The new rules provide an early look at how Apple plans to manage the service. Businesses that rely on home services, cryptocurrency ATMs or bail bonds will not be able to advertise under the current policy, while medical service advertisements will face individual review.

For businesses with physical locations, the new platform could offer another way to reach Apple Maps users once the ads launch. However, the policy indicates that eligibility will depend heavily on the type of business and how Apple chooses to manage the advertising experience.

What Apple’s Maps Ads Policy Means

Apple’s first advertising rules for Maps point to a controlled rollout rather than an unrestricted local advertising marketplace.

By excluding many home service businesses and other categories while reviewing some medical service ads individually, Apple appears to be setting tighter boundaries around the businesses that can pay for visibility on its mapping platform.

The company has not yet announced the final launch date, but its new advertiser documentation and policy, effective July 14, 2026, offer a clearer picture of what businesses can expect when Apple Maps ads arrive.

As Apple prepares to launch Maps ads in the U.S. and Canada this summer, businesses interested in the platform will need to pay close attention to the company’s advertising rules and category restrictions.
