On Friday, the CMA officially designated Google Search as having “strategic market status” (SMS) in the online search and search advertising sectors. This status means Google holds a “substantial and entrenched position” that demands tailored regulatory oversight to maintain fair competition.

The CMA emphasized that Google’s dominance in search is nearly unchallenged.

“Other traditional general search providers are significantly smaller than Google and have been for many years,” the regulator noted.
Microsoft’s Bing, for instance, holds less than 5% of both search and ad market share—an imbalance that has persisted for over 15 years.

What The Designation Means For Google

While the new status doesn’t immediately impose new rules, it gives the CMA broader powers to investigate and intervene in Google’s search operations. This could include changes to how search results, ads, and AI features are presented in the UK market.

The CMA clarified that the move doesn’t imply Google has broken any laws but rather acknowledges its outsized influence in the digital economy. The authority can now assess whether specific “conduct requirements” should be applied to make the market more competitive.

AI Search Features Come Under Scrutiny

The designation covers Google’s core search engine, its online search advertising services, and AI-enabled search tools such as AI Overviews and AI Mode. It also includes personalized features like the Discover feed, Top Stories, and the News tab.

However, Google News itself and search syndication services remain outside the scope for now.

Interestingly, the CMA noted that while Gemini AI—Google’s AI assistant—is not currently part of the designation, the regulator plans to reassess its scope as AI-driven search evolves. This suggests the CMA is preparing for a future where AI assistants play a larger role in how users find information online.
