Roblox Expands Use of Age Estimation Tech and Introduces Standardized Ratings

Roblox expands use of age estimation tech and introduces standardized ratings as part of its push to improve safety and transparency. The company is rolling out facial recognition-based age checks to all users and adopting global rating standards through a partnership with the International Age Rating Coalition (IARC).

This move comes as Roblox faces ongoing lawsuits tied to child safety concerns, signaling a stronger focus on protecting young players while keeping parents informed.

Age Estimation Tech for Safer Play

By the end of 2025, Roblox will require all users who access communication tools like voice and text chat to go through its age estimation system. This system scans selfies and analyzes facial features to estimate a player’s age.

The technology works alongside other verification tools, including ID checks and parental consent, making it harder for children to bypass age restrictions by simply entering a fake birthday. Roblox says it also plans to roll out new systems to further limit communication between adults and minors.

Standardized Ratings with IARC

In addition to expanding age checks, Roblox is adopting standardized global content ratings. Through its partnership with IARC, Roblox will replace its internal maturity labels with familiar ratings from trusted authorities worldwide.

  • U.S. players will see ESRB ratings

  • German players will see USK ratings

  • Korean players will see GRAC ratings

  • U.K. and European players will see PEGI ratings

This update gives parents clearer, region-specific insights into the type of content their children are exposed to, including factors like violence, blood, or strong language.

Why This Matters for Parents and Players

Roblox expands use of age estimation tech and introduces standardized ratings at a time when online safety has become a growing concern. Parents gain a stronger layer of protection, with tools that help them understand what their kids are playing and who they’re interacting with.

For players, this shift means a safer, more transparent platform that aligns with global content standards. For Roblox, it’s also a critical step in addressing regulatory and legal scrutiny around child safety.
