Revel shuts down ride-hailing to focus on EV charging growth

Revel EV charging expansion after ride-hailing shutdown

Revel has officially ended its ride-hailing service in New York City to fully commit to expanding its EV charging network. The company, which first launched in 2019 with electric scooter rentals, has gradually shifted its business model toward electric vehicle infrastructure. With stations already operating in New York and San Francisco, Revel aims to meet the growing demand for fast charging in major cities across the United States. This strategic move positions Revel to play a key role in accelerating the EV transition while scaling its network for broader accessibility.

Why Revel is leaving ride-hailing for EV charging

The decision to shut down ride-hailing reflects Revel’s focus on building a sustainable and scalable business in the electric mobility space. According to CEO Frank Reig, the company believes investing in EV charging infrastructure is the best way to support the shift to electric transportation. The change means parting ways with its fleet of Tesla and Kia vehicles and selling 165 valuable for-hire license plates, each estimated to be worth up to $25,000. By reallocating resources, Revel can dedicate more capital and attention to growing its fast-charging footprint in cities where EV adoption is accelerating.

Growth of Revel’s EV charging network

Revel’s EV charging journey began in 2021 alongside its ride-hailing launch. Initially, utilization rates were low, with just 21% of charging activity in early 2023—most of it from its own fleet. However, by early 2025, the network saw a surge to 45% utilization, thanks in part to partnerships with other mobility providers. A major boost came in 2024 when a leading ride-hailing platform directed many of its drivers to use Revel stations. This collaboration not only increased revenue but also strengthened Revel’s position as a reliable charging provider for both fleets and individual EV drivers.

Future plans for Revel EV charging

Revel’s long-term goal is ambitious: to operate more than 400 charging stalls across Los Angeles, New York, and San Francisco by the end of 2026. The company sees fast charging as the critical infrastructure needed to accelerate EV adoption in densely populated areas. With more cities setting targets to phase out gasoline vehicles, Revel’s expansion could help address the shortage of urban charging options. By focusing entirely on this mission, the company hopes to establish itself as a leading force in the clean transportation ecosystem, delivering convenience, speed, and accessibility for all EV drivers.
