AT&T Abandons New York 5G Home Internet Service Over Affordable Broadband Law
Telecommunications giant AT&T has pulled its 5G home internet service in New York State following the implementation of the state's Affordable Broadband Act. The law, which mandates that internet providers offer affordable plans to low-income households, has prompted AT&T to withdraw its wireless internet service rather than comply. The New York Affordable Broadband Act, passed in 2021, requires internet providers with a significant customer base (over 20,000 subscribers) to offer two affordable broadband plans: Plan 1: Download speeds of at least 25Mbps for no more than $15 per month. Plan 2: Speeds of up to 200Mbps for a maximum of $20 per month. These plans are available to low-income households that qualify for government assistance programs like Medicaid or the National School Lunch Program.
