The Accountant – IFRS 17 will support accurate and timely accounting and financial reporting under IFRS 17. The position covers reconciliations, controls, disclosures, reporting, compliance and related financial processes.
Key Responsibilities
The role includes supporting:
- Accurate and timely IFRS 17 financial reporting for monthly, quarterly and annual reporting cycles.
- IFRS 17 accounting entries and journals, including accurate posting to the General Ledger.
- Accounting and reporting of insurance contract balances, including Liability for Remaining Coverage, Liability for Incurred Claims and Contractual Service Margin.
- Accounting and reporting of revenue, service expenses and finance income or expenses in accordance with IFRS 17.
- Accounting and reporting of reinsurance contracts held and reconciliation of reinsurance balances.
- Analysis of movements in IFRS 17 balances and investigation of significant variances.
- Mapping of IFRS 17 outputs to the General Ledger and financial reporting structures.
- Preparation of financial statement disclosures, reporting schedules and supporting documentation.
- Monthly and quarterly IFRS 17 financial close processes.
- Reconciliations between IFRS 17 sub-ledgers, actuarial results, General Ledger balances and relevant financial records.
- Investigation and resolution of reconciliation differences and unexplained movements.
- Completeness and accuracy checks on IFRS 17 data, calculations and accounting outputs.
- Maintenance of supporting schedules, working papers, audit trails and IFRS 17 process documentation.
The position will also support interpretation and application of IFRS 17 and IFRS 9, monitor developments in relevant accounting standards, and contribute to technical accounting papers, accounting assessments, policies and reporting methodologies.
Additional responsibilities include validating system outputs, supporting user acceptance testing, documenting test cases and working with Finance Systems, IT, Actuarial and external providers to resolve reporting and system issues.
The Accountant will also support regulatory reporting, audit schedules, working papers, audit queries and agreed audit recommendations. The position requires collaboration with Actuarial, Financial Reporting, Finance Systems, IT, Operations and other business teams.
Qualifications and Experience
Candidates should have:
- A Bachelor’s degree in Finance, Accounting, Commerce, Business Administration or a related field.
- A professional accounting qualification such as CPA-K, ACCA or equivalent.
- Membership of ICPAK or an equivalent professional accounting body in good standing as an added advantage.
- Additional training or certification in IFRS 17, insurance accounting or financial reporting as an added advantage.
- A minimum of two to four years of relevant experience in finance, accounting or financial reporting.
- Experience in insurance or financial services, preferably in a life insurance environment.
- Practical IFRS 17 accounting, reporting or implementation experience as highly desirable.
- Experience in financial close, reconciliations, financial statement preparation and regulatory reporting.
- Experience with ERP/General Ledger systems and advanced Microsoft Excel skills.
- Experience supporting internal and external audits.
- IFRS 17 system implementation, UAT, data validation or reporting-process enhancement experience as an added advantage.
