Matthew Prince, the chief executive of Cloudflare, made a striking prediction during an appearance at the SXSW conference in Austin this week. Speaking candidly about the rapid evolution of AI, Prince told attendees that the volume of bot-generated traffic on the internet is on a trajectory to surpass human-generated traffic within the next two years. For a CEO whose company sits at the infrastructure layer of a massive portion of the global web, that is not a casual observation — it is grounded in real data flowing through Cloudflare's systems every single day.

Prince's company serves as the backbone for roughly 20 percent of all websites globally, meaning the traffic patterns he sees offer one of the clearest windows available into how the web is actually being used. When he talks about bots overtaking humans online, he is drawing from a signal that few others can access at that scale.

Why AI Bots Visit 1,000 Times More Websites Than You Do

To understand why this tipping point is arriving so fast, consider the behavioral difference between a person browsing the internet and an AI agent doing the same task. Prince offered a vivid illustration during his SXSW remarks. When a human shops for something like a digital camera, they might visit five websites, skim through reviews, compare a couple of options, and make a decision. An AI agent completing the same task operates on an entirely different scale.

"Your agent or the bot that's doing that will often go to 1,000 times the number of sites that an actual human would visit," Prince explained. "So it might go to 5,000 sites. And that's real traffic, and that's real load, which everyone is having to deal with and take into account."

That multiplier effect is what is driving the explosion in non-human traffic. Every time a person asks a chatbot a question, every time an AI assistant plans a trip or researches a topic, hundreds or even thousands of web requests are generated behind the scenes on that person's behalf. The websites receiving those requests do not distinguish — a visit is a visit, a server request is a server request.

How the Internet Went From 20 Percent Bots to a Bot-Dominated Web

Bot traffic is not a new phenomenon. Even before the generative AI era, the internet was already 20 percent non-human. Prince noted that the largest single source of that older bot traffic was simply web crawlers like search engine indexers doing their routine work of cataloguing the web. Beyond those, the remaining bots were mostly bad actors — scrapers, spammers, and fraudsters.

But that landscape has fundamentally changed since large language models and generative AI tools became mainstream. The demand these systems have for data is, in Prince's own words, "insatiable." AI models need to ingest vast quantities of web content to train, update, and improve themselves. And as AI-powered agents become more capable of performing tasks autonomously on behalf of users, the number of web requests they generate compounds rapidly.

The combination of training crawlers, inference-time data fetching, and autonomous agent behavior has stacked multiple waves of bot traffic on top of the existing baseline. The result is a web where bot activity is no longer a minority footnote — it is becoming the dominant mode of internet interaction.

What This Means for Websites, Businesses, and Developers

For anyone running a website or digital business, this shift carries real and immediate consequences. Server load is increasing in ways that existing infrastructure was not necessarily designed to handle. Security systems built to detect and filter human versus automated behavior need to become significantly more sophisticated. And the metrics that businesses have relied on for years — page views, sessions, unique visitors — are becoming harder to interpret when a growing share of that traffic comes from machines rather than people.

There is also a more philosophical disruption quietly building beneath the surface. If the majority of web traffic is soon generated by AI agents acting on behalf of humans rather than by humans themselves, then the very notion of a website as a destination for human visitors begins to shift. Web content increasingly needs to be readable and useful not just for people, but for the machines interpreting it on people's behalf.

The New Infrastructure Being Built for an Agent-Powered Internet

Prince did not just outline the problem at SXSW — he pointed toward some of the solutions that companies like his are beginning to develop. One of the key concepts he described is the idea of sandboxes for AI agents: lightweight, temporary computing environments that can be rapidly created when an agent needs to perform a task and then shut down once that task is complete.

Imagine asking an AI assistant to plan a vacation for you. Rather than the AI simply retrieving a few pieces of information, it would spin up a dedicated agent environment capable of browsing travel sites, comparing prices, reading reviews, and assembling an itinerary — then disappearing once the job is done. That kind of on-demand, ephemeral infrastructure is the direction Prince says the industry needs to move toward.

"What we're trying to think about is, how do we actually build that underlying infrastructure where you can — as easily as you open a new tab in your browser — you can actually spin up new code, which can then run and service the agents that are out there," he said.

The analogy to opening a browser tab is deliberate and revealing. Just as tabbed browsing made it effortless for humans to juggle multiple contexts simultaneously, the next generation of internet infrastructure is being designed to let AI agents do the same — at scale, on demand, and invisibly to the end user.

A Turning Point the Web Has Never Seen Before

What makes this moment different from every previous wave of internet change is the speed and scale of the shift. Previous transitions — from desktop to mobile, from dial-up to broadband, from static pages to dynamic web apps — unfolded over years and allowed businesses and developers gradual time to adapt. The AI-driven bot traffic surge is compressing that adaptation window dramatically.

By 2027, if Prince's prediction holds, the internet will cross a threshold it has never crossed before: a majority of its traffic will not be generated by human curiosity, human decision-making, or human desire. It will be generated by machines acting on behalf of humans. That is a profound structural change — one that will ripple through web hosting, cybersecurity, digital advertising, content strategy, and the economics of running an online presence.

The web was built for people. The question the industry is now urgently working to answer is what it looks like when it is mostly being used by something else.
