A Strategic Move Back Into Delivery

Waymo, best known for its robotaxi service, has experimented with delivery before. The company previously ran pilot programs with UPS and Uber Eats, and even launched a dedicated trucking division called Waymo Via before shutting it down in 2023 to refocus on robotaxis.

Now, with DoorDash as a strategic partner, Waymo is taking a more targeted approach — one that focuses on local, consumer-friendly delivery services.

How The Waymo–DoorDash Partnership Works

Under this new, multi-year agreement, DoorDash customers in a 315-square-mile area of Phoenix can receive their food and grocery orders via a self-driving Waymo vehicle. The service starts with deliveries from DashMart, DoorDash’s network of convenience, grocery, and retail stores.

Not every order will be handled by a Waymo vehicle at first, but the plan is to gradually expand to more local merchants and product types across Phoenix.

According to Waymo, this marks the company’s only active delivery-focused partnership at the moment — signaling a focused test of how autonomous driving can integrate into the fast-growing on-demand delivery market.

DoorDash’s Growing Bet On Autonomy

DoorDash has been steadily investing in autonomous delivery solutions. Beyond this new collaboration, it already partners with Serve Robotics for sidewalk deliveries in Los Angeles and maintains an in-house team working on its own self-driving technology.

David Richter, DoorDash’s VP of business and corporate development, said the partnership will give customers “a new and delightful experience” while helping advance a “multi-modal autonomous future of local commerce.”

This partnership isn’t just about convenience — it’s about the future of delivery logistics. By combining Waymo’s autonomous driving technology with DoorDash’s massive customer base, both companies are exploring new ways to make urban deliveries faster, safer, and more sustainable.
