Waymo Can Keep Testing Robotaxis In NYC Until End Of 2025

New York City has given the green light for Waymo to continue testing its self-driving cars. Under an extended permit, Waymo can keep testing robotaxis in NYC until end of 2025, marking another milestone in the race to bring autonomous vehicles to one of the busiest cities in the world.

The extension means Waymo’s Jaguar I-Pace fleet will remain on the streets of Manhattan and Downtown Brooklyn for another year, still with human safety drivers behind the wheel. The company is exempt from New York’s rule requiring one hand on the wheel at all times, which gives its technology more room to operate in real-world conditions.

Why Waymo’s NYC Testing Extension Matters

Waymo’s expanded testing is significant because it brings the company closer to launching the first commercial robotaxi service in New York City. Unlike other cities where autonomous driving has faced fewer regulatory hurdles, NYC’s dense traffic and complex road systems are seen as the ultimate proving ground.

The company already runs commercial robotaxi services in San Francisco, Los Angeles, Austin, Atlanta, and Phoenix. Over the next year, Waymo plans to expand to Miami, Washington, D.C., Dallas, Denver, and Nashville.

Support From Lawmakers And Regulators

New York officials are backing the pilot, framing it as an opportunity to improve road safety and mobility. Assemblymember Brian Cunningham praised the move, saying autonomous testing could reduce congestion and make transportation more accessible.

“This is the type of measured innovation that allows us to prepare for the future while making sure progress works for New Yorkers,” he said.

The Road Ahead For Waymo In NYC

Despite the extension, Waymo still faces challenges. For now, the company cannot carry passengers or operate a paid robotaxi service in New York. The current permit only allows testing with safety drivers, meaning a fully driverless service is still a few steps away.

However, securing permission to keep operating until the end of 2025 shows regulators’ growing trust in the technology. If Waymo succeeds, it could set the stage for wider adoption of autonomous vehicles in other dense, high-stakes urban environments.
