Tesla FSD Faces Traffic Safety Probe

Tesla’s ‘Full Self-Driving’ Software Under Investigation for Traffic Safety Violations

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has launched an investigation into Tesla’s ‘Full Self-Driving’ software under investigation for traffic safety violations. Reports suggest the system may cause vehicles to run red lights or drift into the wrong lanes, raising serious safety concerns.

This new probe follows over 50 reported incidents involving Tesla’s Full Self-Driving (FSD) software, four of which resulted in injuries. It marks one of the first federal investigations focused specifically on Tesla’s FSD driver assistance technology.

Background on Tesla FSD Safety Concerns

Tesla’s FSD system has faced scrutiny before. In October 2024, the NHTSA began examining crashes linked to FSD in low-visibility conditions. Earlier, the agency had closed a separate investigation into Tesla’s Autopilot system after finding 13 fatal crashes related to its misuse, though some follow-up investigations remain ongoing.

Latest Software Update and Investigation Timing

The investigation coincides with Tesla’s release of the latest FSD version, heavily promoted by CEO Elon Musk. This update incorporates training data from Tesla’s limited robotaxi pilot in Austin, Texas. Safety regulators are particularly focused on whether this version improves the system’s performance at intersections and traffic signals.

Reports and Complaints Driving the Probe

The NHTSA’s Office of Defects Investigation (ODI) confirmed it received at least 18 complaints, plus one media report, claiming FSD failed to stop at red lights. Additionally, ODI has six internal reports from Tesla itself highlighting potential safety issues. These incidents underline the ongoing challenges Tesla faces in ensuring its FSD software is safe for public roads.

What This Means for Tesla Drivers

For Tesla owners using FSD, the investigation highlights the need for continued vigilance while driving. Experts advise keeping hands on the wheel and remaining ready to intervene, even with the latest FSD software. The outcome of this probe could influence future software updates, regulatory measures, and the broader adoption of autonomous driving technologies.
