In an era when startup hustle culture is back in full swing — with many tech founders embracing the infamous “996” schedule (9 am to 9 pm, six days a week) — there’s something oddly poetic about faking relaxation through artificial intelligence. Yet, here we are.
Meet Endless Summer: The App That Brings Fake Vacations to Life
Product designer Laurent Del Rey, now part of Meta’s Superintelligence Lab, recently launched a side project called Endless Summer. The iPhone app uses AI to generate photorealistic vacation pictures featuring you — lounging on a beach, sightseeing in Europe, dining out, or enjoying a social night out with friends.
Each AI photo captures moments you wish you had time for — no airport security, no burnout, no sleep deprivation. It’s escapism in pixel form.
As Del Rey shared on X (formerly Twitter), the app is “for when burnout hits and you need to manifest the soft life you deserve.”
“When you can’t live life, you may as well fake it,” he joked in his post announcing the app’s release.
Inspired by Summer, Built by Hand
In an interview with TechCrunch, Del Rey said Endless Summer was born from his love for the season. “As the season ends, I wanted to make something that felt like that,” he explained. “I reverse-engineered the experience — sculpting the code to evoke that summer feeling.”
The app’s design is intentionally simple. Users tap a small camera button at the bottom of the screen, and AI instantly generates a “summer moment” — whether that’s you basking under the sun or exploring a coastal city.
The resulting photos appear in a camera roll-style feed, offering a surprisingly believable illusion of global adventure — even if you haven’t left your couch.
The AI Behind The Vacation Magic
Behind the scenes, the app relies on Gemini’s Nano-Banana image model, which powers the photo generation process. Each tap prompts the model to create fresh variations of summer scenes, capturing different angles, outfits, and locations.
The result is a curated collection of AI-enhanced snapshots — authentic enough to fool your social feed and polished enough to make you wish they were real.
Why It’s Striking a Cultural Nerve
The rise of Too burned out to travel? This new app fakes your summer vacation photos for you reflects a growing tension in modern work culture. As professionals chase productivity and startups glorify “hustle,” rest has become a luxury.
Apps like Endless Summer tap into a bittersweet truth: we’re so digitally connected that even leisure can be simulated. Yet, for many users, the app offers humor, creativity, and maybe even a reminder to slow down for real.
A Reflection of the Times
Endless Summer isn’t just a quirky AI experiment — it’s a mirror to our burnout era. It blurs the line between authenticity and aspiration, highlighting how technology both relieves and reinforces our exhaustion.
Whether it’s a playful escape or a subtle cry for rest, Too burned out to travel? This new app fakes your summer vacation photos for you captures 2025’s mood perfectly — a generation that’s digitally tired, emotionally aware, and ironically, still searching for balance.
