WordPress Telex: Experimental AI Tool for Developers

Web publishing giant WordPress shows off Telex, its experimental AI development tool, at WordCamp US 2025 in Portland. CEO Matt Mullenweg described Telex as a fresh take on “vibe coding,” drawing comparisons to popular prompt-based platforms like V0 and Lovable.

The new AI tool aims to simplify how developers and creators build custom Gutenberg blocks—the modular elements that shape WordPress websites. Whether it’s text, images, or animations, Telex lets users generate functional blocks with just a prompt.

What is Telex and Why It Matters

Telex is more than just another AI experiment. Positioned as an early “V0 for WordPress,” the tool highlights how WordPress envisions the future of web publishing. Instead of manually coding, developers can use natural language to generate custom blocks.

This could open the door for faster workflows, making it easier for both beginners and experienced developers to customize websites without deep technical knowledge.

How WordPress Telex Works

Currently hosted at telex.automattic.ai, Telex is still labeled as “experimental.” Here’s how it works:

  • Users type in a prompt describing the block they want.

  • Telex generates a downloadable .zip file.

  • That file can be installed as a WordPress plugin or tested in WordPress Playground—the browser-based sandbox for WordPress.

During his keynote, Mullenweg demonstrated a developer creating a marketing animation with Telex, showcasing how quickly ideas can be turned into functional website elements.

The Bigger Picture for WordPress and AI

By introducing Telex, WordPress signals a deeper push into AI-driven tools for web creation. With over 40% of the web powered by WordPress, this move could redefine how millions of sites are built and customized.

AI-powered development tools like Telex could:

  • Lower barriers for non-technical users.

  • Speed up site creation for developers.

  • Expand the creative possibilities of Gutenberg blocks.

What’s Next for Telex?

For now, Telex is an early experiment. Automattic and WordPress developers are expected to gather feedback from the community before expanding features. The tool could evolve into a major part of WordPress’s ecosystem—or remain a niche experiment.

Given WordPress’s history of embracing open-source innovation, Telex could mark the start of a new era where AI becomes a core part of web publishing.
