Instagram is Finally Launching an iPad App with Full Features

Instagram is finally launching an iPad app — here’s what to expect

After years of waiting, Instagram is finally launching an iPad app, bringing a native, full-screen experience to Apple’s tablet users. For a long time, iPad owners had to rely on the stretched iPhone version or the web app, neither of which felt smooth or optimized. Now, Instagram is officially rolling out a dedicated app designed for the larger display.

A big-screen experience made for Reels and Stories

The new iPad app opens directly to the Reels screen, letting users swipe through short videos in a more immersive way. Watching Reels on a larger display makes them feel more cinematic while still keeping the interactive features front and center.

Stories appear at the top of the app, just like on mobile, but now they flow naturally within the iPad layout. Instagram has added a left-hand sidebar for quick access to your Following feed, DMs, Search, Explore, and notifications.

Feed options tailored for iPad

Instagram’s Feed on iPad offers three viewing modes:

  • All – recommended posts and Reels from accounts you follow.

  • Friends – posts and Reels only from your mutuals.

  • Latest – a chronological feed so you never miss new updates.

You can also reorder these feeds based on your preference, giving more flexibility than before.

A revamped design for iPad users

Until now, Instagram on iPad was just a blown-up version of the iPhone app, which wasn’t user-friendly. This new release changes that.

For example, while watching a Reel, comments now appear neatly on the side, making better use of screen space. In the messages tab, you can open a specific conversation while still seeing the full thread layout, much like desktop messaging apps.

Why this launch matters

The iPad has long been a go-to device for browsing, streaming, and productivity, but Instagram never prioritized it. By finally launching a dedicated iPad app, Instagram is acknowledging user demand while improving the social media experience across devices.

Creators and casual users alike will benefit from a more intuitive design that makes consuming and engaging with content easier on a bigger screen.
