Tesla’s decision to halt its ambitious Dojo AI supercomputer project marks a major turning point in the company’s AI strategy. Elon Musk recently confirmed that the Tesla Dojo shutdown was necessary after determining that future advancements would be better served by focusing resources on the AI6 chip platform. This move comes just weeks after Musk had projected that Dojo’s second computing cluster would be operating at full capacity in 2026. Why Tesla Dojo Was Discontinued
Initially, Dojo was envisioned as a powerful AI training supercomputer built with a mix of Nvidia GPUs and Tesla’s own D1 chips. Plans for Dojo 2 included the creation of a second factory using the next-generation D2 chip, which promised faster processing and enhanced scalability. However, Musk revealed that the D2 chip’s development has been halted alongside the broader Dojo initiative. Instead, Tesla will focus on AI5 and AI6 chips—developed with manufacturing support from TSMC and Samsung—which offer more unified capabilities. The Tesla Dojo shutdown reflects a strategic decision to avoid splitting resources between two divergent AI architectures.
The Shift to AI5 and AI6 Chips
The AI5 chip is designed primarily to power Tesla’s Full Self-Driving (FSD) technology, enabling advanced driver assistance features. Meanwhile, the AI6 chip is engineered for a wider range of uses, from onboard inference for autonomous driving to powering humanoid robots and handling large-scale AI training workloads. According to Musk, combining AI5 and AI6 chips on a single board reduces network cabling complexity and costs dramatically. This design approach not only increases efficiency but also opens the door to what Musk refers to as a potential “Dojo 3” concept—a more integrated and cost-effective AI computing platform.
