How the new Google Docs ‘Audio’ feature works

Within Google Docs on the web, you’ll now find a new Audio option under the Tools menu, located between Voice typing and Gemini. When you select “Listen to this tab,” a sleek pill-shaped audio player appears, complete with duration, play/pause controls, and a scrubber for easy navigation.

You can move this floating player anywhere on the screen. Users also get customization options such as adjusting playback speed and choosing from several clear, natural-sounding voices like:

  • Narrator

  • Educator

  • Teacher

  • Persuader

  • Explainer

  • Coach

  • Motivator

Adding audio buttons directly to documents

Beyond listening for yourself, Gemini in Google Docs also lets editors embed audio buttons directly into a document. This means readers can click and hear sections of text out loud. To add one:

  • Go to Insert menuAudio buttonsListen to tab

  • Place the button where you want readers to access the audio

This feature is perfect for collaboration, study groups, or professional documents where listening adds convenience.

Why this update matters

The ability to have Gemini read aloud Google Docs with the new ‘Audio’ text-to-speech isn’t just a productivity boost—it’s also about accessibility. Students can absorb information while multitasking, writers can catch errors by hearing their work out loud, and professionals can review reports on the go.

By blending AI with text-to-speech, Google Docs now serves not just as a writing tool, but as a listening companion that adapts to how you work and learn best.
