The Growing Pains of Decentralized Social Platforms

Decentralized social platforms are gaining popularity as an alternative to traditional social media networks. But as users migrate to these open networks like Mastodon, Threads, Pixelfed, and Bluesky, serious concerns around content moderation, misinformation, and platform safety are emerging. Yoel Roth, former head of Twitter’s Trust and Safety and now a safety leader at Match, warns that these platforms are not equipped with the tools needed to combat online abuse and illegal content. His insights shed light on the difficult balance between decentralization and accountability, particularly when it comes to protecting users from spam, disinformation, and harmful media.

Unlike centralized platforms such as Facebook or X (formerly Twitter), decentralized social platforms often pride themselves on giving users more control and autonomy. But Roth highlights a critical flaw: the lack of robust moderation tools. He argues that while the intent behind decentralization is to create community-led spaces, these communities often don’t have the technical capabilities to effectively enforce their rules. This results in a digital environment vulnerable to bot attacks, CSAM (child sexual abuse material), and manipulative content. These problems not only endanger users but also threaten the long-term viability of the fediverse — the interconnected web of decentralized apps using protocols like ActivityPub.

Why Decentralized Social Platforms Struggle With Moderation

One of the central issues with decentralized social platforms is their architecture. Because no single entity controls the entire network, moderation becomes fragmented and inconsistent. A user banned from one server can easily join another, continuing harmful behavior without consequence. According to Roth, this structural flaw leaves room for bad actors to exploit gaps in oversight. This has been particularly evident on platforms like Mastodon, where volunteer moderators often feel overwhelmed, undertrained, and unsupported by any form of centralized safety infrastructure.

Even worse, Roth notes that some of the platforms aiming to be most community-centric — like early Bluesky and Meta’s Threads — initially gave users minimal tools to enforce their values. For example, moderation dashboards, user-reporting systems, and real-time spam detection mechanisms were either rudimentary or entirely absent. This lack of investment in safety features reflects a disconnect between platform philosophy and user experience. Without these safeguards, even the most well-meaning decentralized networks can become breeding grounds for abuse, eroding trust and discouraging long-term adoption.

Balancing Free Expression and User Safety in the Fediverse

Despite the shortcomings, the vision behind decentralized social platforms is still compelling. They offer an antidote to the algorithm-driven echo chambers of big tech and promise transparency, user ownership, and democratic governance. But freedom without accountability creates risk. Roth, reflecting on his tenure at Twitter during controversial decisions like banning President Trump or dealing with Russian bot farms, emphasizes how difficult moderation becomes at scale — even with an entire team of professionals.

For decentralized platforms, the challenge is even more daunting. Most of these communities rely on volunteers who are not equipped to handle complex issues like hate speech, harassment, or misinformation campaigns. While some solutions have emerged — such as blocklists, instance-level policies, and open-source moderation bots — they’re still far from what’s needed for robust content governance. Worse, inconsistent moderation undermines user confidence. A safer experience demands a shared standard across the fediverse — something that doesn’t naturally exist in a system designed to resist central control.

The Future of Decentralized Platforms Hinges on Trust and Safety

To thrive in the next phase of online communication, decentralized social platforms must evolve from idealistic experiments into reliable digital spaces. Roth believes this starts with prioritizing trust and safety at the architectural level. That means building moderation tooling into the core protocols, offering support and training for volunteer moderators, and setting community-wide safety norms. It also means acknowledging that user freedom should not come at the cost of user protection.

Projects like ActivityPub and Bluesky's AT Protocol must focus on scalable trust models, spam filtering, and abuse detection that operate across instances. Meanwhile, new entrants like Threads — backed by tech giants like Meta — have a unique opportunity to merge the openness of decentralization with the engineering resources of centralized platforms. The road ahead will demand collaboration between developers, moderators, and users. If that cooperation doesn’t materialize, decentralized social platforms risk repeating the failures of their predecessors — only without the tools to recover.
