The insurer confirmed that the breach impacted the majority of its 1.4 million customers, as well as some employees. While Allianz Life has not disclosed the exact number affected, data breach alert site Have I Been Pwned reported the stolen information includes names, dates of birth, email addresses, phone numbers, and home addresses.

Social Security Numbers Stolen

Further investigation revealed that hackers also obtained Social Security numbers, a critical piece of personal data. Allianz Life informed the states of Texas and Massachusetts about this part of the breach, highlighting the severity of the incident.

How Hackers Gained Access

The breach was carried out through a cloud-stored customer relationship database hosted by Salesforce. Cybersecurity experts link the attack to a hacking group called ShinyHunters, known for social engineering tactics that manipulate employees into granting access.

Allianz Life is part of a growing list of major corporations targeted recently, including Google, Cisco, Qantas, Pandora, and Workday, all of which reported data theft from Salesforce-hosted systems.

The Threat of Extortion

The ShinyHunters group is reportedly preparing a data leak site to extort victims. This tactic involves threatening to release stolen data unless the victim pays, a method common among ransomware gangs. The group has connections with other cybercriminal collectives, including Scattered Spider and The Com, notorious for combining hacking with extortion and threats of violence.

What Customers Should Do

Affected customers should monitor their accounts for suspicious activity and consider credit monitoring or identity theft protection. Allianz Life is still investigating the incident and has urged customers to stay alert for updates and official notifications.
