AI crawler Firecrawl raises $14.5M, is still looking to hire agents as employees

Firecrawl, the AI-powered web crawler, has raised $14.5M in a Series A and is still looking to hire agents as employees. The funding round, led by Nexus Venture Partners with participation from Shopify CEO Tobias Lütke and Y Combinator, marks a major milestone for the startup.

Co-founder and CEO Caleb Peffer shared a memorable moment with Nexus investor Abhishek Sharma at a San Francisco coffee shop. Gesturing so energetically about Firecrawl’s future, Peffer accidentally tipped his chair—but Sharma caught both him and the chair. “That felt like a symbol of the founder/investor relationship,” Peffer said, calling it a clear signal that he had found the right partner.

Firecrawl’s growth and reach

Firecrawl provides an open-source web crawler for developers and AI agents, with a commercial API version. It has attracted 350,000 developers, nearly 50,000 GitHub stars, and high-profile customers including Shopify, Replit, Zapier, and top hedge funds. Impressively, Peffer says Firecrawl is already profitable.

The company recently launched an API with search capabilities, and soon it will support natural language prompts, according to co-founder and CTO Nicolas Silberstein Camara.

Why this funding matters

Securing Tobias Lütke as an investor was “the best kind of validation,” Peffer said. The new capital will accelerate Firecrawl’s product development, expand its AI agent capabilities, and support its growing community of developers.

Hiring focus: agents as employees

Even with the Series A success, Firecrawl is still actively hiring. The startup is seeking agents as employees to strengthen its AI-driven tools and expand its team. This approach highlights Firecrawl’s unique business model that combines cutting-edge AI technology with human talent.

Firecrawl’s rapid growth and innovative technology make it a standout in the AI and developer ecosystem. With new funding and ongoing hiring, the company is set to scale further while maintaining profitability.
