For over 24 hours, X users have been struggling with persistent bugs and performance issues, raising urgent questions like: Why is X not loading properly? What caused the recent outage? And when will X be fixed? Many users report problems with messages failing to load, timelines freezing, and posts disappearing unless the page is refreshed multiple times. This widespread disruption impacts millions who rely on X for real-time communication and social engagement.
Image : GoogleThe root of these ongoing issues traces back to a data center outage that began Thursday afternoon. Downdetector, the crowdsourced outage tracking platform, recorded thousands of reports starting at 2:12 p.m. Eastern, highlighting problems ranging from login failures to missing direct messages. X’s official Engineering team confirmed the degraded service, attributing it to a data center outage with active remediation efforts underway. Adding to the turmoil, Wired revealed that a fire broke out at an X-leased data center near Portland, Oregon, though the direct connection to the outage remains unclear.
This incident marks another chapter in X’s recent history of technical difficulties. Just two months ago, in March 2025, X faced a major disruption where users worldwide were disconnected abruptly and experienced trouble accessing feeds and sending messages. Elon Musk, who acquired X (formerly Twitter) for $44 billion in 2022, attributed that disruption to a cyberattack without providing evidence. Before that, X also encountered significant connectivity problems in December 2022 and July 2023, as well as timeline update issues earlier this month.
Since Musk’s takeover, X has undergone massive changes in its workforce and infrastructure. The company slashed its staff from 7,500 to about 1,300 employees, leaving only around 550 full-time engineers by early 2023. Another round of layoffs in November 2024 further impacted the engineering team, possibly contributing to service instability. Reports suggest that X’s rapid downsizing has led to security vulnerabilities, including server misconfigurations that could expose the platform to denial of service attacks, exacerbating the risk of outages.
For those relying on X for business, news, and social connection, these outages pose significant frustrations and disruptions. The company’s current focus is on restoring full functionality, but user confidence may take longer to rebuild. As X navigates these challenges, keeping an eye on platform updates and official announcements is critical for understanding when the service will stabilize.
