TikTok Enhances Accessibility with AI-Generated ALT Text and New Features

TikTok is making its platform more accessible than ever with the rollout of several new tools aimed at improving the user experience for individuals with visual impairments. The update, launched on May 14, 2025, includes AI-generated ALT text for photos, a high-contrast mode, and support for device-level bold text preferences. These changes come as part of TikTok’s ongoing efforts to ensure that the app remains inclusive for all users, particularly those with visual challenges.

One of the most exciting features is the introduction of AI-generated ALT text for photos. While creators were previously able to manually add ALT text to their posts to describe visual content for users with screen readers, this new feature automates the process. If a creator doesn't add ALT text, TikTok’s AI will step in to provide a spoken description of the image. This feature is designed to enhance accessibility for people with visual impairments, allowing them to better engage with the platform's content. TikTok's move mirrors similar efforts from other social media giants, such as Instagram, which has been using AI for ALT text since 2018.

In addition to the AI-generated ALT text, TikTok is also introducing a high-contrast mode. This new feature, accessible through the app's accessibility settings, enhances the contrast between text, icons, and other user interface elements. By increasing the visibility of these elements, TikTok is making the app more usable for individuals with low vision or sensitivity to low contrast. The high-contrast mode provides users with an option to personalize their viewing experience, ensuring greater accessibility.

Another key update involves support for bold text preferences. TikTok now automatically adjusts the in-app text to match the bold text settings on a user's device, offering a smoother, more comfortable reading experience for those who rely on bolder fonts. This change demonstrates TikTok’s commitment to enhancing readability and overall usability for a wider range of users.

TikTok’s push for inclusivity goes beyond just these updates. The platform already offers features like auto-generated captions for videos, dark mode, and adjustable text sizes, all of which work together to create an accessible environment for people of all abilities. As TikTok continues to innovate, these new features reinforce its dedication to building a platform that supports diversity and empowers all users to share their stories.

"We know that when people feel seen, heard, and supported, they’re empowered to share their stories, create, and connect with others in meaningful ways,” said TikTok in a recent blog post. “That’s why we’re focused on continuously building products that serve everyone. We see accessibility not just as a responsibility, but as an opportunity to innovate and foster a more inclusive platform for our global community.”

With these new updates, TikTok is setting a high standard for accessibility in social media, helping ensure that users with different needs can enjoy a seamless, personalized experience while engaging with the content they love.
