New Android 16 Security Features Fight Scam Calls & Theft

Google Launches Powerful Android 16 Security Features to Block Scams and Theft

If you're wondering how to protect your Android phone from scams, theft, or app hijacking, Android 16 introduces major security updates that do just that. In a major announcement ahead of Google I/O 2025, Google revealed advanced Android security features designed to safeguard users against fraud, phishing attacks, and unauthorized access. These updates include scam call detection, enhanced screen sharing protections, app permission controls, and theft deterrents—all rolled out to create a safer Android ecosystem.

Scam Call Protection: Real-Time Warnings During Suspicious Calls

Scam phone calls remain a growing threat, with attackers often urging users to click on malicious links or download harmful apps. To combat this, Android 16 introduces real-time scam call protection. If you're on a call with someone not in your contact list, your phone can now detect suspicious activity—such as a prompt to sideload an app or grant sensitive permissions—and will issue on-screen alerts to keep you safe.

Critically, Android will block actions like first-time sideloading from browsers or messaging apps that haven’t been verified by Google. These smart protections are backed by Google Play Protect, which remains active during calls to continuously scan for harmful activity.

Screen-Sharing Alerts: Stop Sharing Sensitive Data Instantly

Google is also rolling out screen-sharing protection to prevent attackers from spying on your device. After a call ends, Android 16 will remind users to stop screen sharing—a simple but effective safeguard for your private data.

In collaboration with select banks in the U.K., Google is piloting a fraud prevention feature for devices running Android 11 and above. If a user opens a participating banking app while screen-sharing with an unknown number, the phone will display a warning and an option to immediately end the session. This feature directly combats one of the most common vectors for bank fraud and remote access scams.

Enhanced App Permissions and Anti-Theft Security

Scammers often exploit accessibility permissions to take over devices remotely. Android 16 prevents apps from gaining these powerful permissions without proper verification. This change is especially critical in protecting against ransomware, spyware, and data theft.

Additionally, users on Android 6 or later will no longer be able to disable Google Play Protect while on a call, further reducing the chances of attackers disabling the phone’s built-in defenses.

What This Means for Android Users

These features highlight Google’s renewed focus on mobile cybersecurity, user safety, and fraud prevention. By using machine learning, contextual warnings, and tighter app controls, Android 16 is set to become the most secure Android version yet.

Whether you're worried about falling for a phishing scheme or accidentally exposing sensitive data during a screen share, these protections aim to give users peace of mind and real-time support against growing digital threats.
