Mozilla Shuts Down Pocket Read-It-Later App by July 2025

Mozilla is shutting down its popular read-it-later app Pocket, effective July 8, 2025. If you’ve been wondering, “What is happening to the Pocket app?” or “How can I save my saved articles before Pocket shuts down?”, here’s everything you need to know. Mozilla, the parent company of Pocket since 2017, has decided to retire the service as user web habits evolve. This decision impacts millions who rely on Pocket to save, organize, and discover quality articles to read later across devices.

Pocket has been a favorite tool for saving web content offline, organizing articles, and discovering curated stories. However, Mozilla announced it will stop supporting Pocket and its browser extensions starting July 8, 2025. After this date, Pocket will operate in an export-only mode, allowing users to download and save all their data—including saved articles, favorites, notes, highlights, and archives—until October 8. This gives users a three-month window to back up their content before the service goes offline completely.

The shutdown of Pocket is part of Mozilla’s strategic shift to focus on products that better fit today’s web browsing trends. Mozilla plans to enhance its core browser experience by integrating personalized features such as vertical tabs, smart search, and AI-powered tools. These innovations will be reflected in the revamped New Tab page, which already offers shortcuts to frequently visited sites, recent pages, and bookmarks. This signals a move toward a more streamlined, high-performance browser experience tailored to modern user needs.

Mozilla is also retiring Fakespot, the browser extension designed to help users identify fake or unreliable product reviews online. According to Mozilla, while the concept behind Fakespot resonated with users, it did not fit a sustainable business model, prompting its discontinuation alongside Pocket.

Although Mozilla hasn’t disclosed exact user numbers for Pocket, the app built a dedicated following over its years of operation. Many users have expressed disappointment on social media, highlighting the app’s importance for offline reading and content discovery. Still, Mozilla emphasizes its commitment to providing high-quality web content access through other channels, including newsletters and enhanced browser features.

If you rely on Pocket for organizing your reading list, now is the time to export your saved articles to avoid losing access. Mozilla’s focus on innovation aims to build a browser that is more personal, powerful, and independent—keeping users at the center of the web experience in 2025 and beyond.
