Price Increases on Leica Cameras in Canada Due to US Tariffs
In May 2025, Canadian Leica camera buyers will face a price hike similar to the one recently seen in the United States, thanks to the ongoing effects of US tariffs. Both Canadian and US customers will experience a 7% increase in prices, directly impacting the cost of these premium cameras across North America. This price adjustment comes as a result of Leica's supply chain structure, which links its Canadian operations closely with the US.

A Calgary-based camera shop, The Camera Store, was among the first to learn of the price increase after receiving notice from Leica USA. Managing director Peter Jeune reached out to Leica to question why Canadian customers were subjected to US tariffs, especially when there are legal options to avoid such charges when exporting to other countries. Leica's response highlighted their desire for price parity between Canada and the US, explaining that the tariff adjustments were unavoidable due to the company's operational structure.
Leica's Response to Canadian Pricing Concerns
Leica explained that its products are imported into both Canada and the US through the same supply chain, which is managed from its US headquarters. This centralization means that Canadian customers will experience the same pricing changes as those in the US. Leica’s trade marketing & product communications manager, Nathan Kellum-Pathe, confirmed that the tariff adjustment will impact both markets similarly. Although structural changes are not feasible at this time due to current tariff timelines, Leica is actively exploring ways to support Canadian buyers, including the possibility of establishing Canada as a separate subsidiary.
Why Tariffs Are Affecting More Than Just Leica
The impact of President Trump’s tariffs continues to be felt across the photography industry. Recently, DJI raised the price of its popular Osmo Pocket 3 camera by $100, and Blackmagic Design, an Australian camera manufacturer, increased prices on its digital cinema cameras. Furthermore, Blackmagic paused plans to build a new factory in Texas due to the high cost of imported semiconductor parts, a direct result of these tariffs. These ongoing price increases reflect the broader challenges manufacturers face as they navigate the complex global trade environment.
As Leica continues to adjust its pricing strategy, Canadian customers are left grappling with higher prices for premium products. However, the company has acknowledged the need for better support for its Canadian market and is actively exploring ways to address these concerns.
The Impact of US Tariffs on Canadian Camera Prices
The price hikes for Leica cameras in Canada, starting in May 2025, are a direct result of US tariffs that have affected not just Leica but also other companies in the photography and electronics industries. With Leica exploring potential structural changes to better support Canadian customers, it remains to be seen how the company will adapt to the evolving market conditions. Until then, Canadian buyers should prepare for price increases across a range of Leica products.
