Today, LiveKit boasts impressive traction with over 500 paying customers and more than 100,000 developers utilizing its cloud platform and open-source offerings, according to co-founder d’Sa. Its impact spans critical infrastructure, serving as the "backbone for roughly 25% of 911 emergency calls in the U.S." Furthermore, LiveKit's technology is trusted by "large aerospace companies for launch and flight observation," powers "Skydio for police drones teleoperation," and is utilized by teams within "Oracle and Adobe in various government applications."
From Open Source to Cloud Solution: The Genesis of LiveKit Cloud
The journey to a thriving startup began when "large companies like Spotify, Oracle, and Reddit were experimenting with LiveKit and asked us for a cloud-hosted version of it," d’Sa shared. Inspired by the concept of "Cloudflare, but for media streaming," d’Sa, a former early engineer at Twitter, and Zhao, the former director of engineering at Motorola, decided to transform LiveKit into a startup, launching their managed service: LiveKit Cloud.
Powering Innovation: From Tech Giants to AI Breakthroughs
Currently, LiveKit provides SDKs, tools, and APIs that empower developers and companies to build immersive streaming video and audio experiences. The startup's impressive client roster includes tech giants such as Spotify, Meta, and Microsoft, alongside innovative companies like Character AI, Speak, and Fanatics. Notably, LiveKit's robust infrastructure also powers OpenAI's groundbreaking ChatGPT Voice Mode, highlighting its crucial role in cutting-edge AI applications.
Future Growth: Expanding Engineering, Infrastructure, and AI Capabilities
The San Jose, California-based company is strategically focused on expanding its engineering and product teams, which currently comprise around 50 individuals, and scaling its core infrastructure to meet growing demand. Looking ahead, LiveKit is actively developing what d’Sa describes as an "elastic agent compute service," a product designed to deploy and automatically scale voice "agents" like sophisticated chatbots.
Envisioning the Future: LiveKit as the "AIWS" of Communications
"It turns out what LiveKit is ultimately building is ‘AIWS’ — an AI-native cloud provider," d’Sa asserted. Drawing a parallel to the transformative impact of Stripe on payments, he believes, "What Stripe did for payments, LiveKit is doing for communications."
Strong Financial Performance and Recent Funding
LiveKit's financial health is robust, with d’Sa reporting a run rate exceeding $10 million last year. This momentum is further fueled by a recent $45 million Series B funding round led by Altimeter, with participation from Redpoint Ventures and Hanabi Capital, positioning the company for continued growth and innovation in the real-time communications landscape.
