Google Gemini Live Review: Astra-Powered Camera and Screen Sharing Features Now Available

As an Android enthusiast, I’ve been eagerly testing Google’s latest Gemini Live Astra features. Launched in April 2025, Gemini Live introduces AI-powered camera and screen-sharing functionalities that promise to transform how we interact with our devices. If you’re using a Google One AI Advanced subscription, or have access through select devices like the Pixel 9 Pro or Galaxy S25, here's what you need to know about this exciting update.

How to Access Gemini Live’s Astra Features

To access Gemini Live’s Astra-powered features, you'll need a Google One AI Advanced subscription plan. If you own a Pixel 9 Pro, Pro XL, Pro Fold, or select Galaxy S25 models, you’re in luck—these devices come with a free trial of the advanced tier, ranging from 6 months on Galaxy S25 to 12 months on Pixel 9 Pro models.

Once you’ve confirmed your eligibility, launch the Gemini app on your Android device. A pop-up notification will indicate that the Astra-powered features are ready for use. Gemini Live offers two main controls: a camera button and a presentation icon for screen sharing.

Gemini Live Astra: What’s It Like to Use?

From the moment I launched Gemini Live on my Pixel 9 Pro XL, the interface felt familiar, resembling Google’s standard camera UI. The setup process was swift, and I was able to begin testing its features almost immediately.

One of the standout features of Gemini Live is the ability to switch between your rear and selfie camera effortlessly. This flexibility allows you to point the camera at an object or environment, ask questions, and receive answers—much like having an AI-powered assistant on call. While the camera function is intuitive, I noticed that the focus can be a bit finicky at close range, which may require staying still to ensure clarity.

Screen Sharing: A New Level of Interactivity

Gemini Live's screen-sharing feature is a game-changer for multitaskers. Although this feature is still in its early stages, it allows you to share your entire screen with Gemini Live’s AI. To activate it, simply tap the "Share screen with Live" button that appears above the Gemini pop-up. While this provides a broad view, I found it a bit intrusive since you can’t select specific apps to share—yet.

What makes this feature stand out is its integration with other services like Google Maps and various Google apps. It’s a perfect tool for anyone needing real-time information without leaving their screen. However, I did notice that the absence of visual feedback during screen sharing can make the experience feel less natural compared to traditional camera use.

Accuracy: Some Hits, Some Misses

Like any AI-driven platform, Gemini Live isn’t flawless. During my tests, I asked it about a specific video game cartridge. To my surprise, the AI misidentified the item and provided incorrect information. This is one of the more significant issues I encountered, as it underscores the limitations of relying entirely on AI for specialized queries.

Despite these occasional errors, Gemini Live is still highly functional for general questions. It can give real-time advice about objects, environments, or even answer deep-dive queries like allergen information for food items. However, its accuracy largely depends on how clear the viewfinder is and whether you’re interacting with familiar objects.

The Future of Gemini Live: What’s Next?

Gemini Live’s Astra-powered features represent the beginning of Google’s ambitions for AR and AI in everyday mobile interactions. Although the current features are still a bit rough around the edges, I’m excited about its potential. In the future, I can imagine using this for tasks like adding flight details to my calendar or creating shopping lists from URLs—all seamlessly integrated with my other services.

For anyone invested in Google’s ecosystem, Gemini Live offers a glimpse into the future of AI-assisted interactions. The camera and screen-sharing capabilities are still in their early stages, but the technology has massive potential for integration with other apps and services. While I wouldn’t rely on it for every task just yet, Gemini Live is an exciting addition to Android devices and a solid foundation for what’s to come.
