Chromebooks to Get Major Boost with Snapdragon X Plus Chips

If you're wondering whether Chromebooks are getting faster in 2025, the answer is a big yes — thanks to the powerful new Snapdragon X Plus chips. Developers have begun preparing ChromeOS to support Qualcomm’s Snapdragon X Plus processors, signaling a major leap in performance, AI capabilities, and battery efficiency for future Chromebook models. With Chromebooks increasingly used for work, gaming, and AI-driven tasks, this update couldn’t come at a better time.

According to a recent Chromium project Gerrit code review, a new developer commit has officially added support for the Qualcomm SoCID X1P42100 — the technical name for the Snapdragon X Plus. This early sign strongly suggests that active development for Chromebooks powered by these high-performance chips is already underway.

Although the Snapdragon X Plus isn’t Qualcomm’s top-tier "Elite" processor, it still brings impressive specs to the table. Featuring up to 45 TOPS (trillions of operations per second) of AI performance through its Neural Processing Unit (NPU), these new chips will position Chromebooks as serious contenders against traditional Windows laptops. Expect AI-enhanced features like smarter multitasking, faster document processing, and more efficient background tasks — all without draining your battery.

Historically, Qualcomm’s efforts in the Chromebook space have been underwhelming. Devices like the 2021 Acer Chromebook Spin 513 delivered excellent battery life but struggled with performance due to the sluggish Snapdragon 7c processor. Even with improvements in the 7c Gen 2, like those seen in the Lenovo Chromebook Duet 3, Qualcomm opted not to release a 7c Gen 3 variant for Chromebooks, leaving MediaTek and Intel to dominate. Unfortunately, Intel-powered Chromebooks, while faster, haven't exactly been known for outstanding battery life.

The arrival of the Snapdragon X Plus could change everything. Chromebook users may finally experience the holy grail: desktop-class performance, powerful AI tools, and all-day battery life — without the bulk or heat of traditional laptops. This move also opens the door to more premium Chromebook experiences, tapping into lucrative markets like cloud gaming, remote work, and mobile content creation.

With AI acceleration becoming a core feature of modern computing, the Snapdragon X Plus positions Chromebooks to thrive in an increasingly connected, productivity-focused world. Expect new models to target both education and business sectors, offering features that rival high-end Windows PCs but at much lower costs — a winning formula for consumers and enterprise buyers alike.
