India’s Ringg Gets Backing from Peak XV as It Pushes Voice AI Past the Phone Call
More than 76% of consumers in India prefer talking to businesses over a phone call, according to a recent Truecaller study. This strong preference creates a major opportunity for any voice AI startup India-based that can automate support and outreach calls effectively. Ringg, a voice AI startup India proudly calls home, already processes 20 million call attempts monthly and just secured an additional $10 million from Peak XV Partners as an extension of its Series A, bringing the round’s total to $15.5 million.
From Text-to-Speech to Enterprise Voice AI
Ringg began as a text-to-speech startup called DesiVocal. However, training proprietary speech models proved expensive, prompting the founders to pivot up the stack. They shifted focus toward building voice AI agents specifically for enterprises.
Indian fintech Cred became Ringg’s first customer. Since then, the voice AI startup India has signed prominent companies including Flipkart, Practo, Groww, and Policybazaar. This customer base demonstrates the growing demand for AI-powered voice solutions across sectors.
Evolving Beyond Simple Voice Calls
Initially, Ringg handled high-volume, low-complexity use cases like outbound calling, lead qualification, and loan collection. Co-founder Siddharth Tripathi acknowledged these weren’t sticky use cases, making them vulnerable to price competition. The company still serves these simpler needs but now targets more complex workflows.
Ringg’s voice agents now handle appointment booking for healthcare clinics, abandoned-cart recovery for e-commerce sites, and KYC checks for fintech apps. For instance, Ringg’s voice agent operates across 1,200 clinics for the healthcare platform Practo, assisting patients with booking visits and post-visit follow-ups.
Expanding Beyond Voice to Omnichannel Support
Voice calls still represent over 70% of Ringg’s business. However, the voice AI startup India is expanding into other channels, including chat and WhatsApp. For clients like Shell, Ringg is even automating browser-based support requests. Tripathi positions Ringg as a platform for agents that deliver outcomes, rather than just voice agents.
Strategic Focus on India and Global Capability Centers
Most of Ringg’s customers are based in India, with a few in the Middle East and the U.S. However, the voice AI startup India isn’t selling directly to U.S. companies. Instead, it targets global capability centers in India—offshore hubs that multinationals use for back-office and support work. Ringg aims to sell automation capacity alongside human support to these centers.
Building Proprietary Models and Managing Costs
Tripathi noted that Ringg builds its own speech recognition and generation models. The company aspires to own the full voice stack, including infrastructure and deployment. Currently, this remains too costly, so the product functions as an orchestration layer, routing tasks to different models based on the use case.
Peak XV’s principal, Rishen Kapoor, highlighted that Ringg’s background as a research lab gives it technical depth. This enables the company to tackle complex enterprise workflows like merchant onboarding and L1/L2 support with quality and consistency.
Navigating a Crowded Voice AI Landscape
Voice AI in India is increasingly competitive. Model makers like Deepgram, ElevenLabs, Cartesia, and local players Sarvam and Smallest.ai are vying for dominance. Orchestration-focused startups like Bolna and Blue Machines operate at the same layer as Ringg. Sector-focused players like Gnani and Arrowhead concentrate heavily on finance.
The layered stack—comprising model makers, orchestrators, and application-layer players—all compete to lock in enterprise workflows. Defensibility increasingly lies with whoever owns the customer relationship and delivers measurable outcomes. For any voice AI startup India-based, this is the key battleground.
Growth and Hiring Plans
Ringg currently employs 40 people, having hired over 15 in the last three months. The company is actively hiring forward-deployed engineers who combine technical skills with product management expertise. Researchers focused on reducing model costs are also in demand as the voice AI startup India continues to scale operations and strengthen its market position.
