Roblox will require all users to perform age checks to access chat starting in January
Roblox will require all users to perform age checks to access chat starting in January, a move aimed at boosting child safety across the platform. With rising concerns over exposure to explicit content and online risks, Roblox is rolling out mandatory age verification for all communication features, including chat. This change ensures users can only connect with peers in similar age groups and protects younger players from potential harm.

How will Roblox age checks work?
Users will be asked to open the Roblox app, allow camera access, and follow simple on-screen instructions for facial verification. The process is managed by a third-party vendor, Persona, which deletes all images and videos after verification. Once verified, players will have access to chat features, tailored to their age group, promoting a safer and more controlled environment.
When will age verification be enforced globally?
Starting in December, Roblox will test age checks in markets including Australia, the Netherlands, and New Zealand. By January, all users worldwide will be required to complete the verification to access chat. Players who skip verification may lose the ability to communicate within the platform, making compliance essential for uninterrupted social interaction.
Why is Roblox implementing mandatory age checks?
Roblox’s decision follows lawsuits and investigations over child safety concerns, highlighting risks like grooming and exposure to inappropriate content. Mandatory age verification reinforces Roblox’s commitment to online safety, giving parents and users peace of mind while maintaining the fun and creativity the platform is known for.
